the inspiration is mount pinatubo when some years ago, all of a sudden, after decades of being dormant, it decided to erupt, spewing debris and ash several kilometers high, blowing ashes to float everywhere, far and wide, turning the skies gloomy gray as far away as metro manila, hundreds of kilometers away, covering metro manila streets and rooftops with thick ash. the pinatubo eruption was so powerful that its ashes changed the color of sunsets not only in the philippines but also worldwide.

that's what happens when clients and advertising agencies decide to run ads not worthy to be called advertising. its dark, its huge and very irritating and unfortunately, everywhere!

all they are doing is wawam! what a waste of advertising money!

here is a first row view of Philippine Advertising and Philippine Marketing.

mount pinatubo erupts shooting ashes several kilometers high, then floating to blanket many other towns hundreds of kilometers away

ateneo bonfire celebration of 5 wins, UAAP Season 71 champions - september 30, 2008

after 2 weeks, la salle finally accepts runner-up trophy

DLSU ‘eagerly receive’ runner-up trophy
Philippine Daily Inquirer

First Posted 05:36:00 10/09/2008

MANILA, Philippines—Almost two weeks after getting swept by Ateneo de Manila University in the UAAP men’s basketball Finals, De La Salle University finally received the first runner-up trophy from host University of the Philippines.

----
‘No one called us’

Bro. Armin Luistro, the DLSU president and chancellor, clarified that the Archers failed to receive their trophy because “no one called them.”“At the time, University officials and other supporters already filled the dugout to express appreciation for the team,” he explained.

“We would have gladly received our trophy during the ceremony because we know that we worked hard to get to the Finals. Being a runner-up in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament is an achievement the University is very proud of.”

with permission from the blog owner, WAWAM!, we are posting here a video of the ending of the mass held last night before the start of the traditional bonfire celebration at the ateneo.

the ateneo community had a lot to celebrate, 5 reasons, actually:

  1. UAAP Seniors Basketball Champion
  2. UAAP Juniors Basketball Champiom
  3. UAAP Men's Swimming Champion (with several UAAP records broken)
  4. UAAP Women's Swimming Champion (with several UAAP records broken)
  5. SBP Basketball Champion

the traditional bonfire was held last night at the ateneo. it was a great celebration - the whole campus was full with every space all over the campus taken by parked cars and even at the late hour of 10pm, there was bumper to bumper traffic at the katipunan still trying to enter the campus.

the whole place was packed with people - it looked like all of the college students were there, many from high school, grade school and a lot of alumni were there. a very large part of the ateneo community came to celebrate and it did not matter that the field where they had the bonfire was muddy. all the shoes and feet of everyone got soaked into the mud at least 1 to 1.5 inches of mud on their shoes. many of the women took off their shoes and walked in the mud barefooted.

-----------------

a couple of bonfire pictures where apparently an ateneo alumni made an effort to get the wood, write the names of la salle players (old and new), include an arrow design, put the wood in his car, carried the wood into the bonfire and waited for it to burn.

i thought that's a really hilarious thing to do! it's totally unexpected and very funny! i bet someone in la salle, as we speak is already thinking of ways to top this one for next season's la salle celebration if they win next year.
it's things like these - the passion, the intensity and the silliness that makes the ateneo-la salle rivalry the best and the most in the country. it has been there for decades, it will still be there for decades more. it's what makes the rivalry legendary and of mythic proportions.
can't wait for next year when la salle tops this one. we shall all have a laugh and much louder than this year, for sure.

apology letters from fr. nebres and the person who did the stunt:

2 October 2008

BROTHER ARMIN LUISTRO, FSC
PresidentDe la Salle University System
2401 Taft AvenueManila

Re: Ateneo Bonfire

Dear Bro. Armin,

I would like to extend my deepest apology to you and to the La Sallian community for what some alumnus or student did at the Ateneo Bonfire, namely, write the names of the La Salle players on the wood. Unfortunately, none of us saw it ahead of time, because the wood pile was covered by a tarp against the rain until the time came to light it.

Despite our rivalries in sports, we are both committed to Christian values and what was done is certainly a violation of values we share.

Once again, my deepest apologies to you and to the La Sallian community. We are trying to find out who is responsible for the act.

Sincerely yours,

BIENVENIDO F. NEBRES, SJ
President

Ateneo de Manila University

Dear Fr. Nebres,

I write this letter for two reasons. The first one is to own up to producing the materials with the names of the Green Archers and placing them prominently in the woodpile before the bonfire for all to see.

Secondly, I sincerely apologize to you for the queasy situation you are in as a result of the backlash it created.

While the nature of this letter is a personal apology to you, please feel free to extend it to parties you may deem fit to receive it.

Sincerely,

Ateneo apologizes over bonfire incident
By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 02:05:00 10/06/2008

MANILA, Philippines—A recent Ateneo bonfire celebration has added fuel to the varsity animosity between the Blue Eagles and the De La Salle University Green Archers, prompting an apology from top officials of the Loyola-based school.

Ateneo de Manila University president Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, SJ, recently apologized to the La Sallian community for an irreverent incident during the bonfire on the Ateneo campus last Sept. 30 to celebrate the UAAP championship won by the Eagles at the expense of the Archers.
Some of the firewood used at the bonfire had the names of the entire La Salle roster bannered by JV Casio, Rico Maierhofer and coach Franz Pumaren.

"Despite our rivalries in sports, we are both committed to Christian values and what was done is certainly a violation of values we share," Nebres said in a letter to De La Salle University System president Br. Armin Luistro, FSC, dated Oct. 2.

As reports and photos of the incident circulated in blogs and online basketball forums, students and alumni from La Salle, and even Ateneo, branded the act distasteful regardless of the rivalry between the two elite squads.

Nebres said none of the school officials "saw it ahead of time, because the wood pile was covered by a tarp against the rain until the time came to light it."

An alumnus already claimed responsibility for "producing the materials" and apologized to Nebres for "the backlash it created."

"Our community accepted [Ateneo's apology]," Br. Bernie Oca, FSC, La Salle's representative to the UAAP board, said Sunday. "We are also awaiting the results of their investigations which they said they will do."

  1. Una sa lahat, I used to think highly of Ateneo.

Pero, ito, it's not funny. And no, La Salle won't do anything like that.

Last year, when we were champions, we just had a very wholesome celebration. And I can only remember one Ateneo joke. "Yung Church of Gesu raw papalitan na nila ng 'Iglesia ni Chris Tiu".

Anyway, we don't celebrate at the expense of our opponents. So I really don't get why people found this hilarious.

  2. That stunt was done in poor taste. Granted, the La Salle team were sore losers (thanks primarily to their coach), but they don't deserve to be treated like this -- each of the players' names jeered at and disrespected. I believed Ateneans would keep their heads high and not stoop down to the level of their competitors, but this stunt went even farther below the belt. It takes dignity away from Ateneo's win and is an insult to the UAAP spirit. I thought Ateneo was better than that.

    ReplyDelete
  3. How tasteless and pathetic! DLSU celebrates cleanly and never did anything as stupid and as low as what Ateneo did. It's too squatter-ish of them to do such awful ways. Good thing I am NOT an Atenean cause if I were, I'm so not gonna be proud of my school after this crappy stunt. Plus, I think Ateneans did this primarily because they think like preschool kids. Ang babaw ng kaligayahan.

  4. pumaren on national media has said ateneo's win was "scripted" from beginning to end, effectively labelling ateneans as cheaters, strongly implying ateneo had bought or bribed the referees.

i find it strange that you do not show outrage at pumaren for telling ateneans to their faces as being cheaters and corrupt.

and yet you show outrage over a harmless prank of writing down names of la salle players on wood to be burned at the bonfire. that stunt did not harm anyone.

on the other hand pumaren's remarks has bismirched the reutation and honor of ateneo and ateneans.

very strange that we excuse pumaren's words as just words from a sore loser and yet we can't excuse the harmless action of a man as silly celebration.

    something is wrong there!

    ReplyDelete
  5. DLSU for many years have included in their chearing routine it's cheerleaders pointing an arrow at the ateneo side and showing great attitude, to say the least. they also have a cheer with the lyrics, "burn ateneo, burn". those are not tasteless and pathetic?

we accept those because it's all part of the histpry of the two schools and very part of college basketball and college psyche. all these are harmless ribbing, students from both sides having a clear understanding, it's all done in the name of harmless, wholesome competetition. nobody really takes any of it seriously. they just laugh, enjoy the show and try to outdo the other.

that is what college life is and it's culture.

    ReplyDelete
  6. what does "poor taste" mean?

    > an ateneo alumni burning names written on wood in a bonfire celebration inside the ateneo campus?

    > rico maierhofer flashing his dirty middle finger to the face of rabeh in front of the 22,000 crowd at the araneta and millions watching on tv?

    > coach pumaren calling ateneans cheaters and corrupt published and show on national media?

in what if the above did you show outrage?

    ReplyDelete
  7. the ateneo bonfire has been there for decades, it has been a tradition. and the ones i attended during my time were exactly like this one -- giddy, silly, crazy. and all that is the perfect brew for happiness and joy in college life. perfect!

la salle can have their own tradition and do whatever they please the next time they win a championship! i will not take offense. i will even congratulate them for having fun and celebrating in their own way.

  8. this is a misquote:

"Yung Church of Gesu raw papalitan na nila ng 'Iglesia ni Chris Tiu".

that wasn't what was said. the joke was something like this:

"Alam nyo ba may bago nang religion? Ang tawag daw ay "Iglesia Ni Chrs Tiu""

    ReplyDelete
  9. let me just make something clear and please, everyone read this : NONE OF THE LA SALLITES WERE ACTUALLY BURNED AT THE BONFIRE! only their names written on the wood were burned!

    PLEASE, everyone understand that!

wawam - nice blog, by the way!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Atenean Dad

Tell that to the La Sallites. They thought we burned all their players alive at the bonfire...Makitid ang kanilang mga utak like their coach

    ReplyDelete
  11. Who said anything about burning people alive? You guys are going way out of context.

First of all, I am ECSTATIC about Ateneo's win! A triple feat indeed: not just college, but high school, and grade school too! That's pretty incredible! However, can't we celebrate our victory without putting down the other team?

In response to your third comment, Antenna:
If it were simply Pumaren's name that was burned, I'd have no problem with that. :) As for Maierhofer, he was already penalized by UAAP and got what he deserved. In fact, if the blocks of wood had only "La Salle" and green arrows painted on them, that would even have been acceptable. But to single out each of the players and personally disrespect their names, simply because they happened to be playing on their university's team -- that is just plain inappropriate and unnecessary.

Also, you do NOT excuse yourself from bad behavior by pointing out that the other party behaved worse (e.g. "Son, why did you get a 75 in Math?" "But Mom, I got higher than my classmate, he got a 60!"). Ateneans should uphold themselves to the highest moral standards, because THAT is what is expected of them.

    ReplyDelete
  12. ok, this was really uncalled for and very distasteful. to the alumni who did this, shame on you. i know if father Ben or any Ateneo official saw this, they would not have let this happen..very unbecoming of an Atenean.

to the LaSallites, ok, you found ONE flaw. by ONE person. big deal. but this doesn't represent the character of the entire Ateneo community.

hush guys. we still won. stop crying over spilled milk.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Having come from both La Salle and Ateneo (thus the username "Half-Breed"), I have been thoroughly exposed to the crazy rivalry between the two schools whether it be for basketball, football and hell, math and debate.

But the very personal, inappropriate burning of INDIVIDUAL names is really...well...pathetic.

I will have to agree with Ateneo Grade School mom.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Rico Maierhoffer did not raise the dirty finger. Google or youtube it out. Plus in multiply now, there is even a picture that clearly shows that the referee himself gave a bad sign to a Lasallian player. Plus, another one is when Tiu elbowed Malabes, and then Malabes was called for the foul. Next question is, why didn't the referee call a technical foul at Baclao for shouting at Maierhoffer at the floor and then called one on Ferdinand for celebrating after a nice play? Would you Ateneans think that there is no chance that it was fixed? With all objectivity, was it a fair game? Plus, a game can be fixed by people who handle the bets, not exactly Ateneans. So Pumaren was not really being offensive to the Ateneo, he's just stating an opinion based on how it was officiated. But the burning of names, are low. Pumaren gave his opinion, and the bonfire was simply a low prank. So it is not at the same level, don't compare them.

    ReplyDelete
  15. When Pumaren called them cheaters, they had basis. It was very obvious to even try to deny it. But burning an individual's name? YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES! Your school obviously doesn't teach you good morals and values. It's too unbecoming. So much for calling yourselves a Jesuit university.

    ReplyDelete
  16. check this out! Ref, doing the dirty finger...

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am an Atenean. I watched the game 2 live and yes, I must agree that there were unfair calls against DLSU. After seeing those, I thought the win wasn't THAT deserving for us. I would want us to win BUT I want to win in a fair and honest fight. With that, I didn't attend the bonfire. After seeing these photos, again, I was a bit shocked because I never knew someone from Ateneo can do such thing. It's below the belt and very unnecessary. Aren't we contented of the championship itself that we had to do that to DLSU?

Please forgive those people. I'm sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  18. get a grip - all is fair in love, war and bonfires! a great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  19. come on, let's admit it. our la salle team sucked big time this season. let the ateneans be. let them have their fun. we just have to learn to accept defeat more gracefully.

    stop the sour graping!

    congrats ateneo!

    ReplyDelete
  20. All I can say is, that's the Ateneo way.

    Sore all the way.

    ReplyDelete
  21. it's embarassing to be a la sallite these days - talunan na, sore loosers pa! all we do is complain and whine. mahiya naman kayo! tigil nyo na yan.

accept deferat! do better next year.

    ReplyDelete
  22. an ateneo grade school mom - so burning names on wood in the bonfire is after all acceptable with you. case closed.

    ReplyDelete
  23. let's be honest with ourselves, we have been guilty of low blows as well, worst than what they did at the bonfire.

the difference is that now, for some strange reason, la sallites are complaining and whining more.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Coming from the 2 schools being in the Ateneo longer and latest, my objective comment is that the things that the names that were written was really a low blow.

Hey...celebrate never at the expense of others - especially and specifically individuals.

Excuses for lapses in judgment shows true colors of the organizers.

Comparing this to an antic that was addressed to an entire university is not an parallel comparison. If they have burned a DLSU jacket, an arrow or an archer, i would have cheered with them. But the names of these people are spelled out clearly in the wood burned. Its entirely different. Disrespectful to say the least to the families of these players.

La Sallites whining? No I don't think so. La Salle has won too many championships and they know that they cannot win every time. And La Salle just won the title last year.

I thought the rivalry has already grown to a mature dimension and that both sides realize this is just basketball. But with this, I think a rumble is brewing....

Watch out for the next season. Both teams, given that they retain the core of their line up, will be key players leading to the championship. Rumble is not far from happening after this "lapse of judgment"

    ReplyDelete
  25. oh come on - there is a difference in acceptability between individual names and the school name, a la salle jacket, a bow and arrow???

    you have to be kidding!

that's like an extremely thin hair line between those two.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  27. way too much are being said over nothing. it was just a celebration. leave them alone. congrats ateneo!

    ReplyDelete
  28. naka attend na rin ako ng bonfires before, this one was the best. di ko nakita yung names on the wood - was too muddy and too dark in that area.ang saya ng bonfire! hoping for another one next year.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes, there is a world of difference between using the school name and specific individuals' names!

This is why the chant goes "Burn Ateneo Burn" and not "Burn Chris Tiu Burn" or "Burn Rabeh Burn". It's a SCHOOL rivalry, so it's acceptable to jeer at the SCHOOL name or mascot. They shoot down an eagle, we burn a green arrow. Harmless ribbing, wholesome competition.

But getting personal is way below the belt, it just goes too far. How would you feel if someone burned a piece of wood with your name on it, or worse, with the name of your son? Put yourself in the shoes of the players' families. It doesn't feel like an extremely thin hairline now, does it?

    ReplyDelete
  30. to antenna

    OH COME ON!

stop being so close minded and stop defending ateneo!

im being neutral about this issue, lasalle has its own faults so as Ateneo!

pati ba naman nanay papatulan mo??? who's so low now? you or your school?

    ReplyDelete
  31. how would i feel if someone burned wood with my name on it? nothing. it's a bonfire of a rival school. it will not surprise me. i would even be flattered as that action confirms how important i am to my school.

if my son's name was on the piece of wood that is burned in a bonfire? i don't know, i don't have a son yet. but just like the above, i will feel the same - a proud mom who now knows my son is doing well in basketball.

it's part and parcel of being in ateneo and la salle. it is part of the two school's history.

    ReplyDelete
  32. it is very dangerous to take these things on a personal level. we need to grow up and be mature about it.

i belong to a group where there are ateneans and la sallites. we often meet before most ateneo-la salle games and during the time we exchange tons of insults and trash talk against each other. but we never take any of it seriously.

after the game, the trash talk and insults continue, with of course the losing team getting the most of it. again, we never take any of that seriously.

we continue to be good friends - before, during and after the insults and trash talk. all of us know we do all those just for the heck of it - for laughs! it makes watching the game more fun.

and that is why i don't get why there is much flak on the names being burned during the bonfire.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ok, mga boys and gels. Cool lang.

Ako Lasalista, ako di ko gusto gawa Ateneo. Medyo baduy but hey, its a FREE COUNTRY.

Let the Blue Eagles have their fun.

BABALIK TAYO.

MGA ATENISTA, ENJOY LANG KAYO. YOUR TEAM DESERVES IT...BUT THE 71st SEASON DOESNT END WITH THE BASKETBALL GAMES.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Obviously, that person commenting as "DLSU" who says stuff against DLSU is actually NOT from DLSU. He or she is just pretending to be one. People from La Salle should know that it is wrong to call themselves La Sallites. C'mon. Do we have to go through this again?

Magpapanggap ka nalang na Lasalista, mali pa. Next time, be sure muna kung tama yung words na ginagamit mo para d ka mabuko. You're obviously not La Salle material. Stop trying too hard.

And yes, it is a SCHOOL RIVALRY. And if you still don't know, it is as a group. The point here is, it's RUDE and CHEAP and just PLAIN STUPID that you mess up individuals here.

How trashy can you Ateneans still be? I've lost a lot of respect for people who still thinks this is funny. Have a conscience you people! Sayang lang ang binabayad niyo sa Ateneo if you'll all end up assholes.

    ReplyDelete
  35. huh? e di sige, you can believe what you want to believe. you choose your own poison. hehe

if we win next year, let's have our own party. we can also do whatever we want.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't think this is any worse than that LA Revilla incident where he mockingly shot at Baracael with his fingers. It's just that people make mountains out of molehills.

Same thing here. It's just a joke.

Have a sense of humor, guys.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i find it funny. kaya pala parang polluted ang la vista next morning, sinunog yung names ng mga taga la salle. hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  38. People, don't generalize.

    ReplyDelete
  39. LOL, OVERSENSITIVE people will always OVER REACT. Luckily the players are good sports and know this was all in jest and friendly, rivalry based ribbing. Srsly, don't you guys have anything better do to do than make a big deal out of this? Like, say...STUDY?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Please dont take this personally on all Ateneans. This was just an isolated case of some people writing the names of your players on the wood and not of the Atenean community as a whole. We do not have cults here and this is not the Jesuit way.

I guess that i cannot be helped after all the years of taunting by the LaSalle crowd in the UAAP with their "id rather be green than blue" and "beat ateneo animo lasalle cheers". The DLSU pep squad also have the habit of pointing an arrow to the atenean crowd which looks amusing if not pathetic at the very least. Coach Pumaren also sourgraped by insulting the atenan community as a whole by calling us "cheaters" and saying that the games were scripted from the very start.

Also, LaSalle likes to think of itself as the "best private univ." in the Philippines which was never true.

i think that's a very good thought: on the names of the players burned in the bonfire issue - let's have a little sense of humor.

    ReplyDelete
  43. sorry to all lasallians. i know it was wrong to disrespect names, but please, do not overreact :P. taking these things seriously will never lead to anything good. please understand that the ateneo would not have let that happen and most of the students didn't even know of this since they were busy cleaning the mud of their shoes. let's stop the whining about the game and just accept that both ateneo and la salle are entitled to championships in the uaap. :) relax everyone :) the rivalry goes on. let's not generalize. those mistakes have been made and we just have to learn from them. have a good day fellow ateneans and our friends from la salle.

    ReplyDelete
  44. hirap talaga pag sobrang talo, madaling mapikon at nagiging super sensitive. may next year pa naman e. don na lang tayo bumawi.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Ateneo UAAP basketball team was better this year. In fact they were the best. They have the best record, they have the individual awards, and they won the championship. Enjoy it. Savor it. It's yours. Forget about last year. Let's not even think about next year yet. We don't have to talk about this all over again.

As far as La Salle's actions go, they definitely did things one would not brag about. We can go on and on and on longer than a hundred energizer bunnies about how La Salle did this bad thing, and Ateneo did that. Or La Salle would've won if blah blah blah... but then Ateneo would still beat them if blah blah blah.

This is insane. Reminds me of being 5 again. Period, no erase.

Now its true that a good joke never hurt anybody but those who don't have a sense of humor. Imagine everyone in a room cracking up because of a joke, and then one guy just sits quietly in one corner saying "bakit? di ko gets".

I kinda feel like that guy right now.

I don't see how burning one's name can be funny. To me it's in the same league as burning a nation's flag. I don't remember diplomats saying "It's ok to burn their flag, they take our local businesses anyway because of globalization."

Just a thought... mannequins of the Ateneo team and coaching staff (heck, throw in Fr. Nebres for good measure), wearing chicken costumes without the head gear, being hanged on the gallows side by side, with flaming arrows being shot at them. Still funny?

There indeed is a fine line between a funny joke and a crude insult. This, my friends, falls on the latter.

  46. ever been to an ateneo-la salle game? the cheering and the noise are probably the loudest compared to all other UAAP games at the araneta. each side will not give an inch, will outdo each other. things at times get heated up.

but after the game, nothing happens. the blues and the greens meet and mingle, walk side by side, face each other outside the araneta on their way to their cars.

they don't shout at each other. they don't cheer or jeer at each other. they just walk past each other just like the way it happens on an ordinary day at the mall or the streets. it doesn't matter to anyone that one wears an ateneo t-shirt and the other a la salle t-shirt. and to think just a few minutes ago, each one of them shouted their lungs out against each other when inside the araneta.

    is that surprising? no.

the point? everyone knows it's nothing personal. it's not an attack against each other. it's cheering for your school. nobody takes it seriously. and yes, everyone has a sense of humor on the silly things people do in these games.

it's ok to be 5, but we aren't 5, we're at least over 16. and being over 16 has with it some maturity, understanding and hopefully a sense of humor.

Believe me, I have a pretty good sense of humor. And yes, I've been to many a La Salle-Ateneo game. I've seen arrows being pointed at the Ateneo side, and I've seen Blue Babble Battalion guys mimicking archers in mid court. Annoying perhaps to the recipient, but all in good natured fun I agree.

    Like I said...

"Just a thought... mannequins of the Ateneo team and coaching staff (heck, throw in Fr. Nebres for good measure), wearing chicken costumes without the head gear, being hanged on the gallows side by side, with flaming arrows being shot at them. Still funny?"

Now is this still funny? Or is it over the board disrespectful? Who draws the line?

Next thing you know it's ok for Mac Barracael to be shot. Maybe that guy with the gun was just showing his feelings against FEU. He might have even been laughing while he pulled the trigger.

I don't think the Ateneo community finds that amusing. Do you?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry has gotten out of hand. Each university has its own flaws whatever way you look at it. I just think the writing of names on the wood was too much. Even my Atenean friends were shocked by this move. They think it was uncalled for. Now Ateneo's celebration is viewed differently by some people. But from what I've heard, Fr. Nebres issued an apology (a letter) to Bro. Armin, Franz Pumaren, the players and the whole LaSallian community. Apparently, they did not know about this.

that one? yes, its funny. its very funny. that sounds like street theater to me, a long lost art form. street theater is a fascinating form of comedy.

in a scene like that, it is rich in the possibilities of mime, hyporbole and slapstick. i also think there will also be a lot of pathos. and in the right amount and mixture, it will be extremely entertaining, and yes funny.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Just because an alumni wrote names on wood and mixed them with the wood prepared by the Ateneo association doesn't mean that everyone in Ateneo is
is "disrespectful", "rude", or other names that are coherent with what people are saying..

true.. it was a very horrible thing to do.. but a lot of people were not even aware of it! I didn't even know till I saw the pictures..

I think people in charge of the bonfire didn't even know about it..so before people bash about Ateneo.. especially those who said that they're "happy" they are "NOT ateneans".. they should think about the accomplishments of Ateneo..

don't get me wrong.. but can one person's mistake really ruin the image of a school that's celebrating its 150th centennial in a year?

    I don't think so.

I am so relieved that you are only one person and that you do not represent the whole ateneo community. I cannot believe that you are still defending this act of disrespect, even if you can see that a lot of people do not share your twisted sense of humor. I have been following this blog since it started and this is the only time I've commented because I think that you're just being a die-hard atenean to the point that you condone this kind of behavior (which is that of a five-year-old's, not of a mature person) just because it's an atenean who did it. And trust me, if ever you do become a parent one day, you would not think it's funny or a 'proud moment' for your son's name to be burned.

Besides, Fr. Nebres already issued an apology, so please examine yourself and realize that you are just giving ateneans a bad name, by being insensitive na parang walang pinag-aralan. To YOU, it may not be offensive, but to MOST of the lasallites and ateneans who were shocked by this, it is.

So this time, just for this instance, Not Everyone Knows It's Nothing Personal, because obviously it IS personal - that's why the everyone you are talking about found it offensive.

Someone had previously mentioned it that it's one thing to attack the school (that's the 'nobody takes it seriously' part you were talking about) and another to attack people just for being part of that school's team.

I've already accepted that the names were only the doing of one or a few alumni, and that was a lapse of morals on their part. But people like you, who still defend his judgment even if it is unethical and wrong - well, I think you need to go see a priest.

  56. this is a very amusing blog and exchange of comments. i am quite surprised with the stunt pulled on the names of the players. honestly, i am still struggling whether it was indeed a funny thing or tasteless.

if you were to ask me what is tasteless though, I would classify the following as tasteless, foul and immoral: a) sour-graping, labeling the game a fraud when in fact most of the la-salle history in the uaap is tainted with controversies: b) athletes' block, players allegedly scoring a 57 in the ncee and graduating from benilde and not in taft, benitez and gatchalian academic scandal, salgado punching incident, arana dancing plus a redux by their pep squad, players allegedly getting cars and a "free lunch of a diploma" to a so-called best private school education.

If these details are not enough to suffice for the word tasteless, i will still hold my head high burning these names symbolically which sales people do during conventions to their competitors, rather act immoral and turn a blind eye to all of these facts by a so-called respectable institute that will do anything to win. :-)

Please make no mistake about it, i am from admu, but i have a lot of cousins from dlsu who are now questioning such values.

how did your brain come to that conclusion?

and equally important - who the hell are you that makes you think you can pass judgement on others?

are you like the the one person the whole ateneo community appointed to assess others if they represent the ateneo community or not? who gave you the power and authority? and did someone give you all the intellectual powers to judge others?

did the whole ateneo community give you those powers or you just decided you are above everyone else and can do the job?

  63. If Father Nebres already sends his apologies because of this act, why can't everyone else see why it is highly unethical?
I have been to numerous dlsu-admu games, enough to know that the archer stance is banned on the court so your claim that there were arrows pointed at the ateneo crowd is clearly false. Sure there are cheering and jeering between the schools. But the keywords there are "between the schools." They are not taken on a personal level.
Whoever owns these names, may they be from a rival university or not, is irrelevant. The fact that they celebrate in the expense of others is the point.
Most of the scandals in UAAP involve DLSU not because it has a bad system but because the other schools' representatives who have been there for the longest time are conniving against dlsu. (I would specify but that would be digressing too much) And regarding the Gatchalian scandal, note that when the DLSU admin found out about this, they admitted it and voluntarily gave up the crown. They asked other schools to do the same. Ateneo responded by hiding Aguilar, their player who was known to have an even worse case. Now who has higher morals?
I've been to DLSU celebrations. There were no personal jeerings against the second placer. Makes me wonder if they put those specific names because they were the second placers or just because they're from the rival university.

  66. This rivalry has gone on for decades and to be honest, it hasn't changed one bit. True some people may find the burning of the names on pieces of wood low and I myself was surprised to some extent. But burning of symbols from rival schools has been prevalent in the collegiate level here and even outside the country. It's all in the spirit of the rivalry and the game. You don't see rival school burning each others' cars and houses up because of the rivalry. And since was the losing party ever silent over a championship? Both La Salle and Ateneo are guilty of complaining and whining that other was cheated on and that the referees were biased ever since God allowed these two schools meet on the court repetitively. All I can say is GROW UP to both parties. There are bigger problems and issues out there to worry about than waste your time whining and complaining about this. Seriously. The alumni from both schools perpetuate this burning rivalry and to some extent, yes it brings in the crowds but we all need to know our limits. There have been fists thrown, curses exchanged and whatnot but professionals should remain professionals.

    Disappointing. For both schools.

  71. The grammar police is back. Sorry, this was supposed to be part of my first comment.

Anyway, I hope this story doesn't distract people from the more important issues plaguing the country. If you find the stunt offensive, I hope you get over it soon. I wish I was creative enough to think of that though. I don't think it's as offensive as burning a cross in front of your family's home, but hey, some people are more sensitive than others, just as some are more callous than others. It's a school rivalry, and as a player for your school team, you need to know that since you will be representing your school, you will also get praises as well as be a target of mockery. Deal with it. At a party, have you ever been the only Atenean in a group of La Sallians? Or the lone La Sallian in a group of Ateneans? Doesn't it suck when they take shots at your school? I think we're all guilty of poking fun at the other person, not knowing that he/she might be sensitive to it. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Is that how the saying goes? I'm not sure. haha

People treat the La Salle-Ateneo rivalry as if we were from entirely different races. It's an effing game! I personally think both teams sucked during the 2nd half of the game though. Ateneo almost choked throwing those 3 point shots. And La Salle, well, just failed to convert. But I digress...

Let's please refrain calling people from the other school assholes as if we don't have assholes in our own school. We're all assholes at least one point in our lives.

So...anyway, I think all that was really hurt here was pride. No laws were broken. It was done within school grounds, by Ateneans, for Ateneans. No careers, families, or basketball skills were destroyed. It's a different story if it was done in a public place or in front of DLSU campus or in front of the players' houses. Forgive Ateneo for acting the way they did kase minsan minsan lang manalo, just as La Salle should be forgiven kase minsan minsan lang matalo. Both sides don't know how to handle it kase hindi lang sanay. Haha!

this kind of hysterical reaction is simply hysterical!

how can anyone even compare the burning of names written on wood to the killing of a human being?! first of all, one is a crime, the other is not. there are other differences, but let's stay on that important point.

for your information, the players whose names were burned on that wood DID NOT FEEL any pain. they were really nor burned. they didn't even know it happened.

let's extend the logic --- maybe we should stop people from wearing their school colors! this might lead to all people wearing blue to be killed or jeered at while walking in malls.

and let's stop the cheers during games as that enhance self importance, love for school and passion - it might turn them into real life psychos and might lead them to kill the others wearing a different school color.

and maybe we should stop the UAAP all together - it has already resulted to one player being killed and names of players burned in a bonfire. where will it stop? where do you draw the line? what if the UAAP leads to an apocalyptic end to these schools, the country and the world?!!!

  77. Bato-bato sa langit ang tama-an…HINDI UMILAG! Hehehe

In short sympathizer. Apaw saya. Ang susunod na aabangan ang victory party… BONFIRE NA!

Ang nakaraang selebrasyon ay kamang-mangha. May kaka-iba.

Sabin g iba, naka handa daw yon.

Tradisyon eh. Well and fine! Kasi pag-gagayahin nila… ala naba silang maisip?

Ben! Kung sin man xya… di xya nag iisip. Siya ang stupid at pathetic.

For next year!

Hehhee

    PEACE OUT!

  82. here's why ateneo is at fault.

you're only as good as your weakest link. thus,if an ateneo alumnus was behind the bonfire scandal, the entire ateneo community is under fire(no pun intended). if fr. nebres himself found it necessary to issue an apology, isn't it similar to accepting a fault?

sure you can make an argument for the dlsu pep squad mockingly sending arrows the blue side's way during games. you can make an argument for the banners against ateneo. but the point is,all these are done to cheer for the respective teams IN THE HEAT OF THE BATTLE.

be gracious in defeat,be gracious in triumph. i admit, lasalle refusing to accept the trophy was disrespectful. they had an option to put the game under protest. however,i have more against ateneo, not because i am from lasalle but because they celebrated at the expense of individuals when the battle was already done. there is such a thing as a heated rivalry, yes. but rivalries often goes only as far as the battle in ongoing. when the battle is done,we are all equal until the next time we find ourselves against one another, that is a rivalry. for ateneo to celebrate at the expense of individual members of the green archers is a show of disrespect. if ateneo had class, they would take the high road and not stoop to a level this low.

however, when all is said and done, congrats ateneo, there's always next year lasalle.

    peace out.

  83. it's really true - payback is a real bitch! and that is what la salle and the others are feeling right now. yun lang yun.

if you can't handle payback of this sort - don't watch the UAAP and most specially the ateneo-la salle game. there is nothing more fierce than this rivalry.

and we are all happy that it is such. it is always something to look forward to every year.

instead of whining, start preparing for next year.

maski anong gawin ng la salle - wala lang yun, "done in the heat of the battle" lang yun. pero pag ateneo - hindi pwede yung "done in the heat of vitory".

ano ba namang klase yan?! haltang halata naman!

    ReplyDelete
  85. i don't really believe in the celebration where you mock the other team. it's adding insult to injury and it's not like you did it all on your own.

inspite and despite the referees' best efforts to put the game away, lasalle was still there, until the ref put matters in his own hands and ejected maierhofer.

    ReplyDelete
  86. let's be real here - mocking of other teams are done by all competiting teams, in celebrations and even at the araneta or venue of the games itself. it's part of team competition.

maierhofer was ejected because maierhofer flashed a dirty finger at rabeh which the referee saw. apparently that's against the rules in the UAAP.

that dirty finger incident WAS NOT the first time. he already got a 1st technical foul earlier for taunting. he shuold have been more careful after getting the 1st technical.

  87. his 1st technical foul was for jawing with baclao. how stupid would rico be to flash a dirty finger at rabeh at such a big game? everyone here knows that's not the case.

you know the game wasnt called fairly. it wasn't even close to fair. did you see the chris tiu second motion that connected on malabes' neck? that happened right in front of the ref and what did he choose to call? only the SLIGHT handcheck on malabes.

and the baclao shouting at maierhofer? wasn't that a clear case of taunting? was that called? no.

  88. this is what makes DLSU-ADMU games exciting, yet we have to consider our actions on things. hindi na tayo mga bata, geezy peezy! kaya nga tayo nakatuntong ng University na ito dahil tayo ay tumanda na. dapat tumalino rin tayo kasama nun.

im from La Salle. na-hurt ako, as in. why? the sticks do not only represent the players, it represents the La Sallian community. but come to think of it. i have an Atenean background. i have the blue blood. Katipunera ako for 12 years and growing up, i was given the Jesuit norms and morals. and for me, i know the meaning of humility because of that. i also know the meaning of sportsmanship. i have friends from Ateneo, and i know that hindi rin nila na enjoy ang sight na un. it was done in poor taste, ika nga.

with the letter by Fr. Ben, im contented. Fr. Ben represents the Ateneo Community, hindi ung gumawa ng sticks. the humble admittance to a wrong doing was enough for me to let this die down. i guess we should too.

so, kung gagawa kayo ng effigy next time, sino ang mascot ninyo? (j/k!)

"Done in the heat of the battle" is actually a justification too but this makes sense while the previous one, does not make any sense at all .... That's if you're trying to justify an act.

"this kind of hysterical reaction is simply hysterical! "

I'm glad you see the hysteria in there. That's exactly how I meant it to be.

You say it's bad to shoot at somebody. Some people find acts like that normal (a way of living, even).

You say it's funny to burn other people's names. Some people like Fr. Nebres apparently don't have the same sense of humor.

Sure, you're entitled to have your opinion and I'm not even going to start saying otherwise. This brings me back to one of my questions - who draws the line?

The point? The games are over. Who's doing the refereeing now? Ever heard of "no blood, no foul"?

"they didn't even know it happened."

Funny. Now I guess we can all steal and cheat away and do anything we want to do... as long as we do it behind the other person's back.

  96. The Ateneo Grade School Mom's statements is logical, fair and level-headed.

Whether or not majority of the people from La Salle were "sore losers" is debatable. But I'm pretty sure a "sore winner" is a bit worse than a "sore loser".

But don't you think it sounds childish to compare the actions of La Salle and Ateneo.

    Wrong is wrong.

(BTW, if one person was responsible for the burning of names, what did the majority of the Ateneans do when they saw what he was doing? One person, indeed..)

  97. to hysterical, previously anonymous:

    "who draws the line?"

in the real world, it is laws that draw the line.

and even that in actual life, it's an invisible line. the laws are written but you don't see most of the written document in everyday life, except if they are traffic signs. this invisibility is what allows people to commit crimes.

the law says it is wrong to kill a human being and jail is the punishement for that. thats very clear. if you commit one, you are a criminal. if you condone it, you become an accessory to a crime and that by itself is a crime.

writing names on wood to be burned in a bonfire celebration is not against the law. that is not in the constituion nor is that in the laws that congress and the courts have for us to follow. there is no crime there. neither is there a crime when one finds the action acceptable.

there is another form of invisible line - social norms of conduct and behavior. that is the line where the burn-the-names-on-wood incident fall into.

but the difference between written laws (lines) and social norms is that unlike laws, they are not at all written but practiced. and the boundaries of what is "right" or "wrong" are extrmely wide, much wider than laws, which is very straight forward in most cases.

and that is whay as you have said, it happens that the same action may be seen as acceptable by some and unacceptable by others. i find it amusing and funny. others don't.

that's the reality of it. we need to accept and respect those differences.

majority of the ateneans who attended the bofire did not see the names written on the wood.

please read WAWAM!'s post in the main section of this blog --- 1,000, i think is much less than that, of the total 15,000 who attended saw the names. the bonfire area was not lit, you will not be able to read the names in the dark. most people, most specially la sallites, saw the names only after they were posted in the internet.

The bonfire disaster is what happens when juvenile alumni of a certain age who wish to re-live their lost youth vicariously through out athletes are allowed free reign to introduce such things as their own fire wood. Whoever gave Paredes the right to do this? Who does he think he is, and why does he think he "speaks" for all Ateneans with his action?

It is interesting to note how many Ateneans seem to think this is "harmless". Harmless? Shameless is more like it.

Do we need the bad old days to return before we take action? Fr. Joe Cruz pulled out the Ateneo from the NCAA because of the violence that followed the games. No, we don't need to go back to those times.

Fr. Nebres apologized because, in his intelligent estimation, there was something to apologize for. Or are some people in this thread now saying he is playacting?

Whoever organized the bonfine must be held accountable and must explain how one alumnus thought he had the right to bring his own firewood for the event. Shame, shame, shame. What an example to the young, particularly the grade school kids who were there.

has la salle officials apologized for (a) coach pumaren calling ateneans "cheaters" and that the only way ateneo won the championship is because it has been scripted as such from the beginning? (b) and for not getting out of the dugout to get the trophy and medals?

  112. Hehehe I think this Ateneo-La Salle or La Salle-Ateneo rivalry is the same exact thing why our country is not progressing. Mashadong partisan. So what kung sinunog nila, We have better things to worry about than that. I just stumbled across this blog and realized na ang daming affected. I am from La Salle, but seriously, this is really BS.

Nung time nila Ren-Ren, nagpamigay yung pep squad ng lechon manok sa game 2 ng ateneo-la salle finals (which we won eventually courtesy or Ren-Ren 2001).

So pare pareho lang yan, panapanahon din, although madalas la salle nananalo, minsan chachamba din talaga ateneo, we have to face that. NU nga nanalo sa Ateneo last year eh, bilog ang bola.

School spirit is over rated.

Sa atin nagfifile ng protest....Nadaya daw nadaya. ano napapala natin? wala, in the end lahat tayo talo.

  114. Is it typical now of Ateneans to think: well that was Nebres, but this is me...? The bonfire was a school affair, a collective, communitarian event that included gradeschoolers to grad students. It was not about you or Paredes or some individual Atenean. Nebres's response was the only appropriate one. And Paredes's apology leaves much to be desired. He apologized for putting Nebres in a queasy situation and for the backlash, not because he thought he had done wrong (he did wrong: he does not speak for me, an Atenean, and in an event like the bonfire, ONLY Nebres can SPEAK FOR ME. Paredes's apology sound's like the apologies of someone we know who sits in Malacanang!!!

  115. yes thats correct - ateneans are taught to think on their own and think independently. ateneans are also taught to accept and respect others who may have a different view.

At marami pang iba!

At Hindi PO! (again) firewood yon! CARTON or CARDBOARD po yon!

Sir, I have high regard to Fr. Ben! He was an outgoing President of Xavier University when I was in my 1st year in College. I is almost like a “god” to us who believe in his vision of social transformation. He founded the college of CTI at Xavier, and makes, the known “VOCATIONAL” courses (na mababa ang tingin ng mga nasa mataas na Pamantasan), thus, brought into the lime light, in Northern Mindanao. Inangat niya ang dignidad ng VOCATIONAL Courses, thus, incorporating it into University level. And it has brought tremendous impact. And this is his one of the major contribution in the Peace and development to our Mindanaw.

  118. DLSU: you cant do anything about it..its their celebration. They can celebrate in any way they want. As it was unfair to you, it would also be unfair to blame the whole ateneo community for the fault of one alumni. Lets not add insult to their injury since they are the ones taking blame for this wrongdoing. Yeah..Payback's a bitch.

Do not equate ung 2005 Lasalle incident at ung bonfire coz these are 2 separate events. I am not justifying na tama ginawa ng DLSU coz it is totally wrong as well. As for the apologies issue... ("nebres apologized to lasalle, AT LEAST HE APOLOGIZED...unlike lasalle who did not apologize nung 2005.."). It was the right thing to do, the apology. But it doesnt make it all better, the damage has been done. It still doesnt make either side the better side just because of an apology. Sign of Humility? yes. Pero wag magyayabang na nagapologize pa kayo and it makes you the better one in the picture. (kaya nga nagapologize, kasi may pagkakamali.).

A twisted sense of humor and morals would find the burning of names' funny.

In general, do not thrive on other people's wrongdoings when we also have our own. Do not push others down and emphasize others' mistakes just to feed your pride, that's just really pathetic.

**burning Rico's or Pumaren's name (as highlighted) is just the same as burning all the players' names.

** Lasalle not getting the trophy was an honest mistake. It was disrespectful but Lasalle wasnt informed that they could already get the trophy. They are not sourgraping because of the simple fact that they have won too many championships to know that they CAN NOT always be the champion. (in my opinion at least). They want what every team wants, aside from the championship of course, A clean and honest game. Im sure any team that had that kind of game would also complain as much and that is not what you call sour graping. Its WANTING JUSTICE.

** IF You say you find the burning of names amusing/ funny...then you raise LA revilla's issue as something UTTERLY WRONG/ DEAD SERIOUS. ito lang un.. You are damn twisted. Ang Ateneo di naman sinunog ung DLSU players LITERALLY..these are all symbolisms. I am not justifying that LA is right for doing such action, and same with ateneo pero bottomline, LAHAT TAYO MAY
    PAGKAKAMALI...

    GET OVER IT!!!

  119. yung apology letter ni paredes - its actually well written. and very smart.

he is apologizing to nebres for the problem it is causing nebres. no apology for the deed. no apology to the la sallites. and he definitely did not acknowledge what he did was wrong.

    palagay ko abogado yun. hahaha.

  120. "you're only as good as your weakest link. thus,if an ateneo alumnus was behind the bonfire scandal, the entire ateneo community is under fire"

kasi nga if one citizen of a country commits a crime, everyone in that country is under fire.

e pano yan ang daming kriminal sa mundo - so buong mundo masama! maraming pare na nagkasala, may mga nang rape at nang abuse --- BUONG SIMBAHAN ay dapat under fire!

parang sci-fi movie. very chilling. hehehe

  122. why is it that the lasallian community is so enraged by the bonfire incident where the losing team's names where written on wood sticks, when it was just something that they wanted to do for the heck of celebrating?

If you'll think about what the Sore Loser's coach said that Ateneo's win was scripted, it was something even more irritating.

coz, what he's implying is Ateneo is NOT capable of winning a championship when DLSU is the opponent.

It's short of Saying na mga mandaraya ang Ateneo.

When infact La Salle was the one who fielded-in an ineligible player before. So, anung tawag nila dun? CHAMBA or Nagkataon lang?

Going back to the issue, it was cheap, YES, but then what do they care?

Does people find it more insulting than what Mr. Pumaren, the Losing team's coach said?

In my opinion, I find Mr.Pumaren's words more insulting than the bonfire incident.

    Btw, I'm a LaSalle graduate.

  123. Philippines slams BBC comedy showing Filipino maid

How appropriate for this topic - one society (or a TV show at least) thinking something is funny, while one government reacting against it.

I'm not a lawyer so I don't know if there were any laws broken. If there weren't any, then why are government officials asking for an apology?

And I thought laws draw the line...

Exactly! I found LA Revilla's actions pretty tasteless. It was probably funny if one just looked at how he did it. But taking into consideration the actual shooting incident makes the act simply uncouth.

I hope this doesn't go on as a discussion on the "bang bang" incident. I hope this doesn't end up as a Filipinos-is-not-equal-to-domestic-helpers topic as well. Let's not digress please.

LA acted like he was 5, and I for one find something wrong with that.

Ang saya kayang mag-saya nang ganoon! Exaggerated yung emotions ninyo kasi 'di kayo nanalo.
    Eh pano pa kaya kami?
And I'm commenting on this based on MY opinion ha.

  128. Employing ala Ku Klux Klan antics to celebrate a basketball victory. A basketball game victory. Now that's is so low. Talk about class. La Salle was humble and modest in victory, like true champions. In the '70's and '80's rumbles often erupted games. This kind of behaviour will fuel such violent acts against each other. Now out of curiosity I'd like to see who can hold it up, talk the talk and and not just burn sticks that don't fight back. Those are the ones who really deserve to burn.
It is an understatement to say that La Salle was far more composed in victory. La Salle clearly has more class.

So stand on a hill and Burn baby, burn. One big BURN! Animo La Salle ---mo ______ !

    LSGH Proudly.

  130. after 2 weeks, la salle finally gets the 2nd place trophy.

official word from la salle on why they did not come out of the dugout to get it --- "nobody called us" says bro. armin.

    yeah right.....

la salle has won so many championships before, they know what happens - there is an awarding at the end of the final game.

also, abs cbn showed rico watching a tv monitor inside the dugout after he was ejected. so they must have known the announcer was calling from them.

grabe ha - sour grapes from beginning to end. parang scripted.

  134. the tv monitor is not directly outside the dugout. there is a hallway in between the tv monitors and the dugout itself.

  135. these la salle players and coach must be really dumb that like in the past which they have won lots of times before not to know and remember that the medals and trophy are given at the end of the final game.

so, all of a sudden they forgot?
