the inspiration is mount pinatubo when some years ago, all of a sudden, after decades of being dormant, it decided to erupt, spewing debris and ash several kilometers high, blowing ashes to float everywhere, far and wide, turning the skies gloomy gray as far away as metro manila, hundreds of kilometers away, covering metro manila streets and rooftops with thick ash. the pinatubo eruption was so powerful that its ashes changed the color of sunsets not only in the philippines but also worldwide.

that's what happens when clients and advertising agencies decide to run ads not worthy to be called advertising. its dark, its huge and very irritating and unfortunately, everywhere!

all they are doing is wawam! what a waste of advertising money!

falling in love with Brand Phelps, the martian

today, legend was made. but this one is for real. the greatest olympian to date made his title official - michael phelps has in his duffel bag 8 olympic golds, the most an olympian has gotten in one olympiad and 14 golds in total, again the most that any olympian ever had. the second most number of golds won by an olympian is a puny 9 gold medals.

but to me, that's not just what was made today, it's the creation of a very solid Brand Phelps. and look out, it's absolutely easy to fall in love with it.

here are the reasons why it's easy to fall in love with Brand Phelps :

after he won his 8th gold, one of the first things he said was - i just want to be with my mom! awwwww!

then he says his 8 golds was not possible if he did not have the kind of team members he has now in the US swimming team. he says he genuinely likes them, thoroughly enjoyed this season and guess what - that's also what his teammates said about phelps.

let's not forget what he did in this olympics - he did not just win, he broke records. in the team competition, he recovered from being nowhere to being at the top after the turn. a true achiever and true champion.

the other legend, mark spitz, another true champion and sports hero has nothing but praise and kind words for phelps. never mind that spitz called him a martian, but he was magnanimous when he said when phelps got his 7th gold, he was the second man in the moon to join spitz and if he gets his 8th gold, well he will be the first in mars. maybe we should rename mars into phelps?
if i was speedo, i would up the cash prize promise to phelps. speedo promised a cool $1 million if he tied the 7 gold record in the last olympics. he did that the other day. in recognition of being an over achiever, if i was speedo, i would up the amount or set up some kind of school or charity for phelps in his hometown. maybe build a new wing in a hospital for children in baltimore. speedo has gotten great media mileage with their offer. doing a little more now will make that triple in value to the brand.
